Each year, about 500,000 people give birth in California. While most pregnancies go smoothly, some parents and babies experience challenges in achieving their best health. The Maternal and Infant Health Assessment (MIHA) survey helps us better understand these experiences.

MIHA is a confidential survey of Californians who recently gave birth. It has been conducted every year since 1999 and collects information about experiences, attitudes, and health behaviors before, during, and shortly after pregnancy.

The information shared through MIHA helps shape programs and policies that support the health of parents, infants, and families across California.

MIHA is a partnership between the California Department of Public Health’s Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division and the University of California, San Francisco’s Center for Health Equity.

You can explore findings from previous years in the MIHA Data Snapshots Dashboard.
